Our Rugby Legacy
From 1964 to Now: A Club Built on Tradition
The Chicago Lions’ story began in the fall of 1964, when a group of determined rugby pioneers set out to build something new in the city's heart. William "Hawk" Walker, a University of Virginia alum, teamed up with Mike Bansley, Peter Boland, Sandy Campbell, and others to form what would become one of the most respected rugby clubs in the country. Soon after, Dick Smith joined the club and led a wave of strategic player recruitment that helped shape the identity of the Lions into a competitive and character-driven team committed to growth.
The iconic bronze lions guarding the Art Institute of Chicago inspired the club's name, symbolizing strength, pride, and endurance. That symbolism still fuels us today. From our early roots to becoming a dominant force in Midwest rugby, the Chicago Lions have always stood for more than wins. We've stood for tradition, tenacity, and the future of rugby in our city.
