Pathways: Men's Senior Division 1 vs. Select Sides

There’s no exact right answer when it comes to choosing what team to play for, but there are several pros and cons that you should consider. 

When it comes to Select Sides, they often tout the high-level tournaments or one-off games they play. Albeit sometimes impressive, this is where the benefits of select sides begin and end. Unfortunately, these squads often lack team continuity, a developed team culture, and, lastly, time. 

For developing players, one of the most important factors to consider when deciding which team to play for is the amount of time and experience, you will gain. Whereas select sides might have a training session or two before a big game, local senior Division 1 clubs often train with one another year-round. Meaning you’re not only working on developing your skills, surrounded by dedicated coaches, but you’re developing your skills alongside your teammates, creating better cohesion on the field and a better sense of community off of it. For those looking to play in the MLR, we couldn’t recommend playing for your local Division 1 rugby club enough. 

Chicago Lions in the MLR

The Chicago Lions, a Senior Division 1 team in the Midwest Rugby Football Union, present an alternative pathway for players to pursue before entering Major League Rugby. Similar to Select Sides, the Chicago Lions offer support and development for players to bring themselves up to MLR standards. Connections with professional coaches as well as access to other high-level athletes, make this team an excellent stepping stone into Major League Rugby. Players interested in joining the Chicago Hounds should consider reaching out to the Lions for advice on how best to prepare for their shot at Major League Rugby.
